Commencing 6 January 2012 the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Northern Ireland,
have engaged Onwave to deliver their Remote Broadband Services initiative. The objective of the Remote
Broadband Services initiative is "To ensure that every Northern Ireland citizen has the opportunity to
maximise the use of computing and Internet technology to enhance their quality of life". As of 30 June 2011,
a total of 1101 customers have been connected to a satellite broadband service in Northern Ireland.
The Department wishes to ensure that users of broadband services in more remote areas of Northern
Ireland continue to have access to broadband services which are comparable - in terms of both quality
and cost - to those which are available in urban areas. The overall objective is to ensure the
continuation of equitable and comprehensive access to broadband services across Northern Ireland until 2015.
DETI has therefore decided that a contract should be offered to ensure that those wishing to acquire a
broadband service who would otherwise be unable to obtain such a service from BT or any other service
provider using wire line technology.
Onwave are providing not only a cost effective service to Northern Irish residential and small to medium
business customers but also giving access to higher speeds available on KA-SAT, the most powerful satellite
currently used for broadband in Europe. Onwave can also offer phone and TV services. Onwave have a
dedicated local presence in Northern Ireland. For further information on services available to Northern Ireland
